Greg Clark, the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has left the government following the appointment of Boris Johnson as Prime Minister this afternoon (July 24).
Mr Clark, who has held the post since July 2016, congratulated Mr Johnson but said ‘the time is right to a new team for a new premiership.’
The MP for Tunbridge Wells held several posts in government prior to joining BEIS, including a year-long spell in charge of communities and local government following the 2015 General Election.
‘It has been an honour to serve the country as Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy for the last 3 years; and as Communities Secretary, Universities & Science Minister, Cities Minister, Financial Secretary to the Treasury & Planning Minister,’ he said in a tweet.
During his time at BEIS, Mr Clark oversaw the publication of the government’s flagship Industrial Strategy in 2017.
He said the strategy would help boost productivity, embrace technological change and increase the ‘earning power of people across the UK’.
The new Prime Minister is expected to announce who will be in his Cabinet on Thursday and Friday this week.
