Wind farms to power every UK home by 2030, says PM

Wind power will provide electricity to every home in the country by 2030, Boris Johnson will say in his conference speech later today.

In his speech, the Prime Minister will set out new plans to make the UK the world leader in clean wind energy.

To do this, £160m will be made available to upgrade ports and infrastructure across communities like Teesside and Humber in Northern England, Scotland and Wales.

Boris Johnson will say that this will immediately create 2,000 construction jobs and will also enable the sector to support up to 60,000 jobs by 2030 in ports, factories and across the supply chains.

The Prime Minister has also set further commitments, these include creating a new target for floating offshore wind farms and setting a target to support up to double the capacity of renewable energy in the next Contracts for Difference auction.

In his speech later today he will say: ‘Our seas hold immense potential to power our homes and communities with low-cost green energy and we are already leading the way in harnessing its strengths.

‘Now, as we build back better we must build back greener. So we are committing to new ambitious targets and investment into wind power to accelerate our progress towards net zero emissions by 2050.

‘This sets us on our path towards a green industrial revolution, which will provide tens of thousands of highly-skilled jobs.

Caterina Brandmayr, head of Climate at Green Alliance, said: ‘The Prime Minister is right that a green recovery is the best way to create jobs in every part of the UK, to lead the world in tackling climate change, and to protect our precious natural world.

‘The race is now on for the Government and British businesses to replicate the success story of the offshore wind in electric vehicles, smart grid technology, and future-proofed homes.

‘With the urgent need to reboot the economy, in order to protect the livelihoods of thousands of people across the UK, and with time running out for the planet, the Prime Minster’s ten-point plan could not be more important.’
