KP Snacks launches UK packet recycling programme

UK snack producer KP Snacks has announced that it is launching a national recycling programme in partnership with the recycling company Terracycle.

The scheme by KP Snacks – the producer of some of the UK’s most iconic snacks such as Skips, Hula Hoops and Butterkist – will give people the chance to set up collection points for packets across the UK.

In a first for the UK, the scheme will accept all types of nut, crisp, popcorn and pretzel packets, which can then be recycled and used to create objects such as plastic lumber.

Mark Thorpe, CEO of KP Snacks, says: ‘I’m delighted to launch this new recycling scheme with TerraCycle, which for the first time will allow not only crisp packets, but also nuts, popcorn and pretzels packets to be recycled.

‘This initiative is just one part of our pacKPromise; a three-stage plan to reduce our packaging impact.’

The scheme will work by allowing participants to sign up via Terracycle’s website, register their collection point and receive a recycling bin.

The recycling bin can then be filled with packets and sent to Terracycle using a shipping label downloadable via their website.

The packets will then be recycled and turned into plastic pellets which can be used to create objects such as outdoor furniture, plastic lumber and storage boxes.

Participants will be encouraged to send packets in bulk as the scheme will offer charity points for shipments over 2kg in weight.

Terracycle Europe’s general manager Laure Cucuron said it was ‘delighted’ to be involved with the scheme.

The scheme forms the second phase of KP’s ‘packPromise’, which has already seen the company invest significantly in using less packaging in its multipacks.
The company aims for its plastic packaging to be fully recyclable by the year 2025 as part of its membership of the UK Plastics Pact.
