Less than 4 in 10 technology companies committed to net-zero

A new report has found less than four in ten technology companies have made formal net-zero commitments.

Global data company iResearch Services surveyed 550 technology leaders from across the world and published the report How Sustainable is the Technology Sector?

According to the report, Australia’s technology sector leads with 50% of companies making a net-zero pledge, while the UK, China and Italy came second with 44% of tech companies committing to net-zero.

Yogesh Shah, Chief Executive Officer of iResearch Services, said: ‘A commitment to Net Zero is a convincing indicator of a company’s determination to execute sustainability practices.

‘Confederation of British Industry head Tony Danker believes businesses can deliver a net-zero world, no matter what politicians decide at climate change conferences, saying ‘this job is on us.’

‘The economic and energy fall-out from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine may have discouraged or slowed companies from following through on net-zero plans and promises, but it is estimated that more than 5,000 businesses around the world have made carbon-neutral commitments.’

The technology industry is currently responsible for 2-3% of global carbon emissions and is facing mounting pressure to address this.

Net-zero pledges are a key way to drive decarbonisation, but with so few tech companies making these, more needs to be done to encourage the industry to take action.

Additionally, recent research examining micro-business owners in the UK found that millions had not introduced measures to reduce carbon emissions as they felt any action they could tak e would ‘not make a difference.’
