Active travel provision across Yorkshire’s biggest metropolitan area has just improved significantly. Here’s what you need to know.
Overall, the Leeds City Bikes scheme has doubled in size in the coming months, with an expansion of the service area and addition of 200 more e-bikes.
It’s now possible to use the system beyond the city centre, extending to areas including Chapel Allerton, Meanwood, and Hyde Park. A new 50 Minute Bundle offer has also been added to the Beryl app, meaning people can bow buy 50minutes of riding time for £8 without an additional unlock charge.
Allowance can be used at any time within 12 months of purchase. This follows the previous rollout of a 100 Minute Bundle, which proved demand. So far, £2.86million has been spent on the Leeds City Bikes scheme, with funding secured through the deal struck to offer West Yorkshire mayoral devolution. Since launching in September 2023, 14,000 journeys have been registered on the network, covering 36,000 kilometres.
‘Our ambition is for Leeds to be a city where you don’t need to own a car. With the Leeds City Bikes scheme expansion into more suburbs of Leeds, we’re giving people choices to integrate and access different transport modes to choose the most suitable mode for their journey,’ said Cllr Helen Hayden, Executive Member for Sustainable Development and Infrastructure. ‘We want Leeds City Bikes to be accessible for as many people as possible and be available for as many journeys as possible, whether it’s nipping to the shops, visiting a friend or just for pleasure. I hope the new affordable Minute Bundles encourage people to give it a go.’
