Volunteers urged to help clean up the National Cycle Network

Cycling and walking charity Sustrans is calling on volunteers to help clean up the National Cycle Network. 

This spring, Keep Britain Tidy, an independent charity whose aim is to eliminate litter are asking people to join in on the #MillionMileMission, helping to clear streets, parks and benches.

In support of the campaign, Sustrans has pledged to clean up 5,000 files of traffic-free sections of the National Cycle Network between May 28 – June 13.

The walking and cycling charity is therefore calling on volunteers to help with the national clean up.

There are a number of ways for people to get involved, including picking up litter, cutting back vegetation or cleaning graffiti.

Those looking to take part can find their nearest section of the National Cycle Network using Sustrans ‘Find a route’ page.

Volunteers are also encouraged to share before and after photos of their clean-up projects on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram @sustrans using the hashtag #GBSpringClean.

Katie Aartse-Tuyn at Sustrans said: ‘In the past 12 months, our outdoor spaces and places, including the National Cycle Network have been more important than ever. Getting outside and enjoying nature has been a real escape for so many of us during this difficult year.

‘That is why, as custodians of the National Cycle Network, we are asking the public, volunteers and colleagues across the UK to help us reach our target by pledging their time to take part in this big clean up.’
